Due to Native businesses being perceived as high risk by outside investors, deals are often structured in ways that place entrepreneurs at a significant disadvantage. Unfavorable terms and unattainable investor driven goals result in extractive, one-sided deals. Furthermore, many Native entrepreneurs are motivated more by community impact whereas outside institutions focus on return on investment which creates a cultural misalignment. This causes many Native businesses to distrust outsider involvement. Traditional methods used to support small businesses, rural communities by private businesses and government agencies have not worked. Tatanka Ska aims to close that gap by providing a private industry solution and a variety of resources.
